She likes it sweet. He likes it dark.

Opal Obscura is what happens when we stop arguing about it.

Andrew and Julia testing Opal Obscura fragrances on blotter strips at their studio table

Julia wears the warm stuff: milky, sugary, the kind of scent you want to eat. Andrew goes for the dark stuff: smoke, resin, old wood, oud. For a long time we couldn't agree on a single bottle.

So we made a game of it. A few perfumes on the table, blotters in hand, and two people smelling the same thing completely differently. Andrew started making gourmands just to understand what Julia loved. Then he kept going. The hobby got out of hand, and now it's a fragrance house.

Andrew makes every formula. Julia has the final say on anything sweet, and Andrew has it on anything dark. A scent that has to win us both over is a meeting point.

We named it after our daughter, Opal, and made it on the Oregon coast in small batches, the slow way.

A note from us

From Julia

I'm the sweet tooth. Give me warm milk, toasted rice, and something baking in the oven. Andrew started making gourmands so he could understand what I loved, and somewhere along the way he got really good at it. If it's sweet and it's on this site, I signed off on it.

From Andrew

I'm the dark side: smoke, resin, old wood, oud. I make every formula here, mostly late at night and usually covered in blotter strips. The Obscura scents are mine. The Opal ones I made for her and had to earn her approval on.

From both of us

The meeting points are the ones we fought over until we both loved them. Thanks for being here this early. We'd love to know which side you end up on.
